When you’re a kid you create. There are endless coloring
pages, paints, pom poms, things to glue together. Then you start to grow up and time, effort, and for me creativity waned.
Then adulthood with work, relationships and responsibility came. Not much time for hobbies of creativity when all you can do at the end of the day is slump into bed.
I never really returned to creating until my 40’s. The first
thing that I recall that sparked my interest was my friend MO had me over to do an online watercolor class. I painted a pumpkin that actually looked like a pumpkin! My friend Col took me to a mosaic class. We sat out on the deck that overlooked the water and it was so relaxing. I learned how to cut tile and recreate an ombre effect. Then there was my sister Sherrill, who was also in creative mode. She would have me over to TEAR UP her kitchen and produce
natural lotions, toothpastes, soaps, tinctures, all free from harmful
chemicals. Useful AND fun. When I would visit my sister in love Marcia, she would teach me how to dye fabrics and showed me all the ropes on color gradation.
Some of my fondest memories are around the table (or the sink!), chatting and creating with friends and family.
My friend Kim took me to a class and at the end, after I had
distressed, sanded, varnished, painted this herb box, I couldn’t believe I had actually made that. I had this sense of confidence, pride, accomplishment all from this silly little Herb Box. I looked around the room, and I could tell others, with their various projects, felt the same. What had produced this wonderful combination of positive emotions wrapped up? Creativity.
After all those experiences, I pursued creativity for
myself. I started visiting the local hobby store daily, and then making things from home. Choose Joy Studios was born.
